Forcing captives into the river, where they drown, reminds me of the story the British imperialists used to justify slaughtering the Irish "barbarians" who were supposedly responsible for doing so. This occurred during an Irish uprising-- I forget which one/year-- when Irish uprisers supposedly forced English/Scottish Protestants into a freezing lake at gunpoint. This was proof to the English that the Irish were barbarians and deserving of slaughter and subjugation.
