Naval Academy's Marine Sentries Sent To War(AP) ANNAPOLIS A Naval Academy tradition that lasted 155 years had come to an end. The Marine sentries stationed at the academy for security and ceremonial duties have been sent to war because of the demand for combat troops. The four dozen Marines will be replaced by Navy enlisted personnel. They were released from their security duties in a ceremony yesterday. A chaplain asked the crowd to pray for them, because many are going into harm's way. The sentries were most visible at the academy's gates. Vice Admiral Rodney Rempt, the academy superintendent, says they provided day-to-day vigilance. He says they looked tough but were always pleasant.
