CHESTERTOWN - Roll out the red carpet.
Strike up the band.
Injured soldier Travis Manning, who has spent the last three months rehabbing from burns after taking on mortar fire from Iraqi insurgents, is coming home to Kent County.
A party to celebrate Manning's homecoming is scheduled for Saturday night at the Frank M. Jarman American Legion post home near Chestertown. Everyone is invited.
"It's a way to say thank you and welcome home," said family friend Beverly Fabri, who is organizing the party.
Manning is the first solder from Kent to be transported stateside for treatment of injuries sustained during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Two others, Army Reservist Jarrett Thompson, 27, and Fabri's son, Pvt. Nick Spry, 19, are among the more than 1,250 U.S. fatalities.
Manning, injured Aug. 31 during what started out as a routine patrol along the main supply route in Baghdad, left Fort Sam Houston in Texas earlier this week.
If everything goes as planned, the 23-year-old Worton man will arrive in Kent by today. First, there was to be a stopover at his home base in Fort Bragg, N.C., where he is serving with the 16th Military Police Brigade.
Manning will be traveling with his bride of a year and a half, Belinda.
She has been by her husband's bedside since he was airlifted from Germany to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Sept. 3.
Manning is recovering from burns over 40 percent of his body, including third-degree burns on both legs from the thigh to boot top. He was injured in a fiery explosion that literally burned the pants off his legs after a rocket-propelled grenade hit the engine block of a disabled supply truck he was trying to move off the road.
...
About Saturday's party for Manning: Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. The party is free and open to the public. There will be a cash bar for all beverages, including soft drinks. Music will be provided by DJ Eddie Lockwood.
