I only turn my tv on every few months and I recall my surprise at seeing adverts for prescription drugs on American channels.
..."Ask your doctor for this product..."
I can just imagine the look on my doctor's face: "Hey doc, I saw this ad about this new medication...can I have some because it sure sounded real good to me ?"
Why isn't the AMA trying to stop this nonsense or do they also benefit ($$$) from their patients gullible faith in commercial ads ?

Since you asked, I did a little research online and it seems that the AMA proposed a commercial drug ad ban in 2001. Obviously, it went nowhere because they couldn't get past the gauntlet of lobbyists. At the same time, individual doctors in the US can recieve free samples from pharmaceutical companies which produces a conflict of interest situation.
