This is a great article off of a great site. I'm personally going to change my registration to Independent soon myself. (I registered as a Democrat in order to vote for Dean, but when he dropped out, I voted for Kucinich in the California primary).
I don't think that the Democratic Party will ever dissolve from an external force as much as it'll become hollowed out as people leave it. An analogous situation happened to the Whigs in the antebellum period-they were one of the original dominant two parties but dissolved, with some of it's members becoming the Republicans in their original incarnation.
The difference ought to be that the next time a major party in the two-party system dies, whoever can push for reform ought to push for the destruction of the two party system altogether, because it's entire history of governance in the United States has been unremittingly awful.

It is really becoming clear that there is no future for anyone but those who are on the inside, w/ the Democratic Party. There is no force opposing the callow opportunists of the Clinton Administration. All our good legislators are retiring.
The Greens have a bad rep, and are regarded as a niche party.
There needs to be some kind of massive organized move to the Independent column, or to a "New" Democratic Party.
In our state, (and, it seems all the others) the Democratic Party machine defeated our efforts to have a paper trail for the Diebold machines.
This is an extremely sinister political party.

So, I think POA said something in another thread about possibly organizing a new party.
Why not?
Why don't we come up with something that represents us?
Just a thought.
Peace.

If you want to come up with another party, that's not such a bad idea. However, the greens are worth looking at if you believe their platform, and there is also the new party (that's the name, might wanna google it). The greens might have a "bad rep" but I would imagine that rep doesn't expand very far beyond democratic hacks. Here is an excellent website with american third parties : www.politics1.com/parties.htm check it out.
