Back in the sixties, I had the good fortune to work with an ex "spook" who's specialty was central Asia. He translated a great many documents of a rather low- level, party memoes etc. The drift of what I remember is that in a way the reds were progressive, at least in comparison to the feudal structure that the Tibetan people have slaved for all these centuries. Much the same can be said for the communist occupation of Afghanistan, there women could vote, go to schools of higher education and attempt to become part of the modern world. The more obvious misdeeds aside, there are good people everywhere that can work through a system if it has just a bit of decensy to it.

In fact, before we cut our cable service ($50/mo and other than John Stewart and the international channel, it was all neo-con propaganda and horrible cheapening of our culture), I saw a program about this that showed footage of the feudal system under the theocracy. It turned everything on its head. Didn't know what to think -- very interested, but it occurred to me of course that the information was sponsored.
It left out the fate of the monks, e.g.
