Haiti's Aristide Set to Receive Asylum in SABusiness Day (Johannesburg) May 11, 2004 Posted to the web May 11, 2004 Hopewell Radebe, Deputy Political Editor Johannesburg DA warns of sheltering undemocratic leaders FORMER Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide's request for asylum in SA is due to be tabled at tomorrow's cabinet meeting by Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a move insiders say is a mere formality. SA was one of countries critical of the role played by the US in the ousting of Aristide from power. The cabinet is expected to approve Aristide's request in line with President Thabo Mbeki's pledge to the Caribbean Economic Community (Caricom) to help bring political stability to the region. The request came through the offices of African Union (AU) chairman, Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, on Aristide's behalf. [rest at link]
