I recently saw a movie,(can't remember which)in a battle scene a Roman officer comments,"People should know when they are conquered."
His companion replies,"Would you?"
Sort of like the old saw from Viet-Nam-"We had to destroy the village to save it!"
Closer perhaps is the slaughter of the populace of Lidice in 1942 by the enraged S.S. when they killed everyone in the village as an act of revenge for the killing of Reinhardt Heydrich.
