I'm starting this party platform development thread in order to discuss issues related to welfare, labor, and employment. Here are a couple of ideas to start out with:
1) Increase the minimum wage to start off with, and then push for a living wage.
2) Repeal the provisions of the Taft-Hartley Act which are anti-labor. Also repeal 'right to work' laws which have contributed to the destruction of the power to strike.
(I'll check and see which states have them, as this could be an issue that we could use to help us there).
3) Provide funding for child-care centers, particularly in low income regions. Also improve tracking and make sure that cities can't 'switch out' the money and use it for something else.
4) Extend unemployment benefits.
5) Start a program to rebuild facilities/infrastructure that we're going to need, in exchange for payment to the participants.

The social cost of a production method may be one way to emphasise the need to do away with welfare for the wealthy. Social cost may be in depleted resources, health risks, long term loss of ecosystem or one of many other costs that are seldom considered by a growth economy. Sustainable systems must be encouraged, by fines or subsidies , we know the earth is too small to continue the predatious systems that are a hold over from the industrial revolution.
