I'm designating this thread to the discussion of tax policy, and what reforms we might want to see along these lines.
(I saw a couple of good suggestions in a Counterpunch article a couple of days ago...I'll refind it.)

I personally think we need to see a number of things for a number of reasons. I will list them below along with their reasonings. * Eliminate loopholes/deductions - reason? Well, as we all know, corporates and rich boys get plenty of loopholes that cost the system billions, but I think we should get rid of ALL loopholes and most deductions/credits. Why? Because the money bill and jill pay into the system and get back as a credit because they have kids could and should be used to fund daycare centeres, schools, etc. * Progressive Taxation - the more ya make, the more ya pay. pretty self explanitory. * Tax all income - From $1 up (or from $1k). Why? Again, because the money poor people would pay into the system should be used to help fund programs they should be getting anyhow, and would make things cheaper for them than it would if they paid out of pocket. Of course, the low brackets should have a low percentage to pay * Pollution Taxes - The more you pollute, the more you pay. Reason? To help discourage pollution (along with MANY other things that can be done - OT for this thread though) That is all I can think of for right now, will add more later if I come up with more.

I'm surprised there have not been more posts to this thread, it is one of the more important ones in forming policy.

I've been thinking long and hard about this subject, but have'nt come up with any concrete ideas to put forth yet.
I have some simple ideas though.
Bush's scheme of allowing businesses to buy SUVs and trucks and the writing off the cost, thereby passing along this cost to taxpayers who can't afford it has to stop.
Public subsidies of private business is wrong. Subsidies for corporations is wrong. No bid contracts paid for with tax money is wrong.
Taxpayers having no say in how their money is being spent is wrong.
Just some thoughts, albeit very simple thoughts.
Peace.

Here's another idea I thought of:
If a corporation owns property in the United States, but it's incorporated elsewhere, it should pay taxes on the property because, after all, it's the nation itself that is responsible for enforcing the laws, maintaining the infrastructure (physical and social), et cetera that makes it possible for the corporation to even locate here.

Makes sense to me. They should also pay taxes on transactions and money earned in the United States

Another point:
A sizable portion of the taxation that exists in the United States right now is currently regressive. As a progressive tax structure is instituted (and funds raised accordingly), the regressive taxation will need to be removed.
Edited to add:
I also rechecked the Counterpunch article that I mentioned in the first post to this thread. The tax proposal advocated there was Tobin taxation, which I thought was a good idea, but belonged roughly equally in either trade or environment. #nosmileys
