Root of the problemThe root of the problem in Palestine is that the Zionists have denied the existence of the Palestinian people. They claimed Palestine was a land without a people and must be given to a people without a land, the Jews. In 1917 British Zionists influenced Britain to issue the Balfour Declaration favoring the establishment of a home for the Jewish people in Palestine, against the wishes of the indigenous people. In 1947, the United Nations partitioned Palestine, giving 55 percent of it to the Jews, who then represented 33 percent of the population and owned 8 percent of the land. American Zionists exerted unprecedented pressure on the U. S. administration to secure the necessary majority. In June 1969, Golda Meir, then Israel's prime minister, stated, "There is no such thing as a Palestinian people ... It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country. They didn't exist." Today, 18 percent of Israel's population is Palestinian, not to mention the 3.9 million living in the occupied territories. Palestinians have been fighting for their lands and human rights since the Zionists decided to colonize Palestine in 1882. Palestinians have the right to fight occupation and injustice.
