Asia news in brief SOUTH KOREA Envoy to U.S. offers to resign over scandal[/url] South Korea's ambassador to the United States has offered to resign over a scandal surrounding the 1997 presidential election, South Korean media reported today. Hong Seok Hyun informed the office of President Roh Moo Hyun late Monday that he intended to step down, Yonhap news agency and YTN television reported. Hong said his resignation was ``to take responsibility for causing social confusion'' in relation to a widening scandal over a purportedly wiretapped conversation in which he allegedly discussed a slush fund for presidential candidates, the reports said, citing multiple unnamed sources.
