FT Notes Blair Demands will Damage Turkey as well By Foreign News Desk Published: Tuesday 21, 2005 zaman.com While echoes of the European Union (EU) summit's downfall continue, the Financial Times (FT), a prominent British business newspaper, criticized British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The FT wrote Monday that Blair's demands damaged many programs of the Union including the enlargement issue that also concerns Turkey. Wolfgang Munchau indicated in his FT news analysis that Blair sacrificed four significant targets for Britain worth 2.5 billion euros. When Britain becomes the EU's term president, the EU will have no constitution and no budget, Munchau advocated in his analysis; therefore, negotiations with Ankara could be delayed. The other three points are listed in the article as well: the damage to the political alliance with Eastern European countries, the derailment of the EU's economic reform plans and Britain losing its chance of forming allies with the new generation European leaders like Angela Merkel in Germany and Nicholas Sarkozy in France.
