A new Zogby International (ZI) poll suggests that after weeks of successfully weathering bad news, some dents may be appearing in what once appeared to be the unassailable position of President George W. Bush. According to ZI, President Bush's job approval rating recently "dropped to 42%-- a record low for his administration and a drop of six points from last month," and if the election were held today, "47% of respondent say that they would support Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, while 41.7% say that they would support" President Bush. When Ralph Nader is brought into the mix, "Kerry continues to lead by five-points with 46.6%, followed by Bush with 42% and Nader with 3.2%. Support for Nader remains virtually unchanged since March." Furthermore, the "majority [of] voters (54%) feel that the US is headed on the wrong track, while 39.9% say things are on the right track." When "asked if President Bush 'deserves to be re-elected', 41.8% of likely voters (down from 43% last month) responded positively, while the majority (52.7%) say that it is 'time for someone new'." And with "regard to voter party affiliation, Kerry leads over Bush among voters who identified themselves as Democrats (83.6%- 9.1%) and independents (46.2%- 36.7%), while Bush leads over Kerry among Republicans (81.2%-7.5%)."
