Posting these stories for posterity because I have a feeling this incident might turn out like the de Menezes assassination, and the air marshal shooting in Miami last year. As I told my family, Americans will regret letting these a-holes militarize the border.May 18, 2006 4:41 pm US/Pacific At Least One Fatally Shot At San Ysidro Border(AP) SAN DIEGO Officials say the San Ysidro border crossing is shut down after U.S. authorities shot and killed the driver of a car headed for Mexico. Apparently the San Diego Union Tribune feels confident enough to report, as fact, that more than one person was in the vehicle, and they were trying to exit illegaly -- even though the circumstances of this incident are sketchy, at best.Attempted border crosser killed at Port of Entry SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICES 4:18 p.m. May 18, 2006 SAN DIEGO – One person was killed Thursday when at least one federal law enforcement officer opened fire on a group of suspected illegal border-crossers trying to drive through the San Ysidro Port of Entry, officials said. The deceased suspect apparently was one of five or more people in a vehicle whose driver was trying to illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico line on Interstate 5, according to San Diego police. Preliminary evidence indicated that the shooting involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said. The ensuing investigation closed the Port of Entry to traffic on both sides during the start of the evening rush hour, resulting in traffic backups estimated at 10 miles. www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20060518-1618-borderois.html

The shooting took place at about 3:30 p.m., NBC 7/39 reported. The incident occurred after the driver of a black SUV was confronted by customs agents at the border. Some time shortly thereafter, a Border Patrol agent became involved and fired a weapon, killing the occupant of the SUV. A witness said she heard the officer tell the driver of the car to stop, but the person accelerated. The witness said she heard two shots. Shattered glass from the driver's side window was visible on the ground outside the SUV. Traffic has backed up for miles in both directions at the border. The California Highway Patrol shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway. An hour after the shooting, traffic headed south was still not being permitted to cross, but some cars were entering the U.S. from the south. Many drivers on the north side of the border were standing on top of their cars and some were seen driving backwards on the freeway, NBC 7/39 reported. The border is still open to pedestrian traffic. Traffic is expected to get heavy at the Otay Mesa as well, as drivers find alternative routes. www.nbcsandiego.com/news/9241581/detail.html

No kidding Edited on Thu May-18-06 08:58 PM by Wheres The Beef KABC reporting the car heading TO Mexico also. This happens all the time down here. Criminals trying to cross the border into Mexico. Lets get the story right before we start blaming the border patrol! Sometimes news reports can be wrong! Marie26 (1000+ posts) Thu May-18-06 09:25 PM Response to Original message 15. Well, this wasn't really an anti-immigrant thing. The car was heading TOWARDS Mexico. If the agent shot it, it's probably because they refused to stop at the checkpoint or something. Mr_Spock (1000+ posts) Thu May-18-06 09:32 PM Response to Reply #15 16. "which was under surveillance for suspected migrant smuggling." I'm not sure what the deal is here... Marie26 (1000+ posts) Thu May-18-06 09:45 PM Response to Reply #16 17. Maybe they'd already flagged the car description or license plate when it previously entered the US because they suspected that car was involved in smuggling immigrants past the border. Then, when the car later headed back across the US border to pick up more passengers, the Border Patrol agent tried to stop it at the checkpoint to question the driver. "A federal agent rapped on the Durango's window with his baton, but the driver accelerated and the agent opened fire, said Anna Valderrama of Tijuana, Mexico, who was about four vehicles back when the shooting occurred." I guess there might be an overreaction because he didn't try to shoot out the tires, but I can also see why the Agent felt like he had to stop the car. [ It makes no sense why the border patrol would wait until later in the day to stop a vehicle it had earlier flagged for suspicion of smuggling, long after its passengers had been unloaded, anymore than it does why someone would smuggle immigrants back to Mexico after smuggling them into the U.S. I can't believe what passes for rational thought in this country these days.] www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2293480#2293624

Why would someone try to smuggle migrants out of the U.S.? When someone migrates here illegally, isn't the point to remain in the U.S. and not risk getting caught coming back and forth from Mexico? And if they had migrated here illegally, why would they do so at a border crossing staffed by border patrol agents and the national guard?
