I used to deal with Allstate in MVA cases when interning for a NYS judge, and all the judges in the civil term HATED them because they would always force a trial instead of settling. That they're doing this with homeowners insurance is no surprise because this is the same tactic residential insurers use here in Florida anytime they want regulations loosened, or legislation passed. And our "representatives" obey like obedient dogs. It's gotten to the point many people no longer can afford homeowners insurance. No New Polices For New York City, Long Island Or Westchester (AP) NEW YORK Sen. Charles Schumer said the state's largest provider of homeowners insurance should reconsider its decision to stop writing new policies in the metropolitan area over concerns about hurricane damage. The Democratic senator said the chance of a Katrina-type hurricane hitting our area is once every 500 years. Allstate, he said, “should have a greater sense of responsibility.” The company, based in Illinois, announced that as of January 1, it would no longer sell new homeowners insurance policies in New York City, Long Island or Westchester County. The decision does not affect current Allstate customers. Schumer contends that Allstate's decision would result in higher premiums for all homeowners because of reduced competition. He called the company's hurricane fears a “bogus scare tactic.” wcbstv.com/local/local_story_034120946.html

I remember in Maryland a group of Allstate employees held a press conference and charged the company with fraud and dishonest practices. I don't know what every happened to them or their charges. I don't recall that that Allstate was ever prosecuted based on the information the employees made available.
