What you can see tonight on the Public Broadcasting System-- a military recruiting film:
Jewel of the Rockies: The Us Air Force Academy's First 50 Years
www.rmpbs.org/jewel
Producer Information: Trux Simmons Rocky Mountain PB
Soon after opening at its new home in Colorado Springs, the US Air Force Academy became the top tourist attraction. Each year it's visited by thousands of people from around the world who come to see its natural beauty, visit its unique architecture and observe the cadets as they go about their rigorous training. This national treasure, nestled against the Rampart Range near Colorado Springs, is more than a military academy. It was designed as a national monument to the future and the site for training the leaders of our newest armed service. It was intended as a place of vision, where young men, and later women, would be educated, trained and inspired to lead our forces in the air and into space. Produced in High Definition television and Dolby 5.1 surround sound, this program will feature cadets, faculty, civilians, and those who were actually involved in the Academy's development to tell the story of its first 50 years. More than a history of the cadet wing, the program will look at how the Academy came to be and how Colorado was chosen for its location. Included will be: the intense care and planning of the county's newest military academy, its establishment and the early days at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, the controversies over its design, costs and scandals, the stories of the establishment of school traditions and some of the distinguished men and women graduates who became combat heroes, generals, astronauts, and academy superintendents. The program will also show the Academy today and how it continues to evolve in order to fulfill its mission to train men and women to lead our country's aerospace force.
