Board Chairman Would Like to Opt out of "No Child Left Behind"
Chairman Steve Abrams wants the State Board of Education to consider opting Kansas out of the federal No Child Left Behind law.
That law requires all students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014, and it says that schools must make annual progress toward the goal.
But critics say the 2001 law created too much bureaucracy, contains unrealistic goals and penalizes states that already had high standards. Also, critics say the federal government hasn't provided enough money.
Abrams, an Arkansas City Republican, said he's not sure how far he wants to take a discussion of opting out, but he wants to see whether there's a benefit to the law.
He acknowledged the state would lose federal funds after opting out but said it's spending money to comply.
