New Mexico needs more funding to implement No Child Left Behind
Last Update: 05/26/2005 8:34:04 AM By: Associated PressSANTA FE (AP) - The federal government didn’t give New Mexico enough money to implement the No Child Left Behind Act in the past school year. That’s according to a report released by state education officials that analyzed New Mexico’s costs of carrying out the education measure but did not address federal funds coming into the state. The state Public Education Department contends the federal government shortchanged it by about $26 million. The agency contends that’s the difference between the costs found in the report and federal spending figures from the US Department of Education. US Department of Education spokesman Chad Colby says he hasn’t seen the report but he says four other studies have found that federal funding to carry out the law is adequate.
